A value to see instead of pace on uphills.

On uphill climbs and against headwinds, pace does not indicate intensity. Even with the same amount of effort, the numbers slow down, the heart rate lags behind by 30 seconds to a minute, and you are pushed back by the heat. Power was separated to show the force being used at this very moment in watts, preventing you from burning up ahead on hilly courses.

This is a device that provides you with numbers on the spot when you are curious about your current pace and distance. It measures distance, speed, heart rate, and time while you run and displays them on your wrist.

If you run without a watch, how do you know your current pace?

This is the average daily error (95% probability) of the satellite signal itself guaranteed by the U.S. government. The error actually experienced at the wrist is greater than this.
This is the average absolute error obtained by measuring 400 to 4,500 meters each for walking, running, and cycling in urban areas, forests, and on tracks using eight different sports watches. On open fields, the error decreased to 0.9 to 4.1%, resulting in slightly higher recorded distances, but in urban areas and forests, the readings were up to 9% short.
This is the average absolute error of the Garmin Fenix 5 optical heart rate measured on a 3.22km trail. In the same test, the chest strap method was 2%.
This is the standard estimation error of the formula for estimating maximum heart rate using "220 minus age." About one in three falls outside this range.

If you have just started running, this is the very first thing you need. To know "how much and how fast" you ran while outdoors, this is all you need. Heart rate and power come after that.
  • 심박 밴드 (가슴 스트랩)It is suitable for people who need to precisely control intensity with numbers. It is definitely better than wrist support for training with constantly changing intensity, such as intervals, or on uphill and downhill mountain trails. The only drawback is that wearing it around the chest is cumbersome.
  • Wrist optical heart rate (watch integrated)It is suitable for people who dislike wearing a separate device or want to build up their heart rate throughout the day, even while sleeping. It is useful for jogging at a steady pace on flat terrain. However, it tends to miss moments when the intensity changes abruptly.
It is suitable for people who train in hilly and windy environments. On uphill climbs, the force required increases even as the pace slows down, but this is not visible when looking at the pace alone. Unlike bicycle power, it is not a direct measurement of force, but a value calculated based on movement.
It is suitable for people who run in places where satellite signals are unavailable, such as on a treadmill, and for those who want to view "status metrics" like cadence or ground contact time. It is attached to shoes or the waist to count the moment the foot touches the ground.

When you wonder what your current pace is — a GPS watch on your wrist

  • Running watches calculate distance and pace by stitching together coordinates captured by satellite signals. Therefore, the more the sky is obscured, the more the numbers deviate. In a test comparing eight different watches, the distance error ranged from 0.9% to 4.1% on open running tracks and from 3.5% to 8.9% in forests and urban areas.
  • The method of measuring heart rate on the wrist involves shining light onto the skin to read changes in blood flow. In a test in which 16 participants compared two devices from one company, the average absolute error of the wristwatch was 6.41 bpm. The device from the same company designed to be worn on the upper arm was 1.43 bpm.
  • Even with the same wrist device, it varied depending on what was being done. The margin of error during jogging was 3.55%, but it exceeded 10% when the heart rate was low, such as when lying down or walking.

  1. First, check if the battery lasts longer than the competition time (especially for the Ultra).
  2. Wrist heart rate readings are inaccurate in cold weather. If accuracy is important, use a chest band.

These are the standards compiled by Running Inside. Since everyone's feet and body are different, this is not the definitive answer.
